Galanthus Nivalis, is the group exploration and response to my fourth year design course “AD Tectonics: Landscape as Tectonic / Tectonic as Landscape”.
The Lady Victoria colliery stands as a symbol of power in the landscape with the ability to directly influence the behaviour of others and the course of events. With an industrial heritage, the Lady Victoria Colliery once supplied mechanical and electrical energy, feeding the cityscape of Newtongrange and the industries which inhabited it.
In the nature of duality for defining the “power” of the Lady Vitoria colliery, our design thesis is predicated on the observation of its processes in accumulation, rather than separation. Understanding every action to have an equal and opposite reaction, our interrogation leads us to analyse the site as three components taken together: physical power, social power - or the shift between the two.
Exploring how these processes manifest at, and beyond Newtongrange, we proposed that the Lady Victoria colliery is not the centre of power but rather a cog in a wider network which together form a system which is the “object of power”.
Mapping both the tangible and intangible relations of physical and social power, the shifts between the two reveal a mutually dependent relationship between the two objects: the Lady Victoria colliery exploits the landscape it situates itself on for its natural deposits of coal and clay, subtracting en masse landscape - to replace it with productive landscape in the form of infrastructural networks and new industry.
